Reminder: You do not have to tackle all topics at once!
Here are some tips and strategies on how to have difficult conversations with your partner:
Respect your partner
Listen to what your partner has to say, make sure you demonstrate genuine care for your partner’s needs and concerns.
Take ownership of your feelings
Be clear about how you are feeling and why you feel that way.
Stay present with what your partner is saying
Avoid bringing up the past, do not use old wounds to open up new wounds.
Set the right tone at the beginning of the conversation
Begin the conversation in a positive way, and invite your partner to take part in this conversation with you.
Set time aside with your partner
Make sure your time together during the conversation is uninterrupted.
Face your partner, non-verbal communication speaks loudly, don’t interrupt, reflect and summarize what your partner is saying. Create understanding.
Know when to reach out for help
Do not feel like you have to manage these conversations with your partner alone. Reach out to a therapist to help you navigate these conversations.
Don’t forget to tell your partner how much you love and appreciate them. Speak kindly to your partner.
The use of these tips and strategies will help strengthen your relationship. Effective communication is an ongoing process, so be patient with your partner as you work through these issues.
