This month we have been talking about harmony! We talked about how to create harmony in our daily lives and how to create harmony within our bodies. Today we are talking about how to create harmony in our environment. Connecting with our spaces is what we do and bringing harmony to our spaces can really improve our mental health.
In today’s Therapy Thursday I encourage you to take an inventory of your space and ask yourself some questions! We are always asking questions, that is what therapy is all about! Get curious and be open to what answers you find.
Think about your space or spaces. Where you work and where you live most importantly. The spaces you spend the most time in. Do you like it? Love it? Is it comfortable? Does it represent who you are? Does it bring you joy or peace? It might sound silly but we have a relationship with our environment and the things we surround ourselves with.
Our environment is a great tool that shows us how we are feeling. Think about a time when you were feeling down or in a bad place. What did your environment look like? It likely reflected how you were feeling. For me, when I don’t clean my kitchen right away I know I am feeling disengaged, tired, or just stressed. When your environment isn’t tidy and feels messy or out of control that represents the out of control and messy you feel within yourself.
This is the power of having harmony in your environment. You can use your space to not only improve your mental health but also align it with who you are and what is important to you. If you take a look around my office you will see a lot colour but you will also see a lot of quirky pieces that represent who I am. Superheroes are my thing, they bring me joy and you’ll see little things around my space that show you this.
If your space or your environment does not represent who you are then think about how that makes you feel, how can it be improved to make you feel better? Everyone’s economic needs are different so I am not saying go out and buy the most expensive beautiful things but little fixes can really make a difference. Reorganize your space and find something you love and incorporate it into your space. For me, it is also mugs! I love finding mugs that represent me, they bring harmony and connection into my space.
Take an inventory of you space and ask yourself “what is working and what is not working?”. Maybe something is there that used to work but now it doesn’t. Make little changes here and there and you will see an improvement in your mood. It will elevate your mental health and elevate how you feel about yourself.
Connecting to our space is part of who we are and our environment is a big influencer on how we feel inside.
What changes will you be making?
