March 8th has marked international women’s day for many years now. We often see a lot of posts that go out on this day to support, celebrate and acknowledge the women in our lives that have made a difference in some way or have inspired us to take action. For those of you who know us well, you know that we are passionate and committed to women’s issues and women’s empowerment.
This year, we are taking a stronger stance in our advocacy and support of women. We are partnering with Fountain of Life and APA to raise funds to build a Rape Crisis Center in Malawi, Africa. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world where more than 65% of the female population experiences being raped by men in their communities. It is not uncommon for girls under 10 years old to be brutally raped on their way to gather water for their families. In order to access support and report the rape, most young women have to travel a full day to a rape crisis center.
The dream of Fountain of Life and APA is to build a large Rape Crisis Center that will serve as a training center for all the wonderful volunteers, provide shelter beds for young women, to house comfort supplies such as blankets, clothes, feminine hygiene products and food. The total cost to build this center including the purchase of the land, build the center, fully stock it and have funds for staff such as medical, counselling and support is only $100,000!!!!!!
Knowing what we know about the trauma of sexual violence and how it affects individuals, families and communities, we could not not get involved. We feel called to do something so we are! We are helping with fundraising, supporting the fundraiser and hoping to go to Malawi next year to see the center and train the many volunteers in trauma work.
If you also feel called to help, you can donate funds, donate a silent auction item or be a sponsor. Women all around the world are living in fear of sexual violence and we can make a difference in the lives of many young women. We are all part of a global community and all women, young and old, deserve to be safe and live free from sexual violence. What will you do?
