Trauma

The term ‘trauma’ tends to describe experiences that are outside of our ‘normal’ daily lives. These experiences can include such things as family violence, sexual assault, childhood abuse, motor vehicle accidents or death of a family member.
These events can leave us feeling unsure about life and ourselves. It is common to feel confused, sad, isolated, fearful and angry as well as unsure about our personal sense of worth and ability. It can also affect our general health by creating challenges with sleep, concentration, appetite, digestion, flashbacks, headaches and a weakened immune system.
Counselling can help not only with the emotional impacts but the physical impacts as well. Trauma leaves us with loss-focused stories about ourselves and others; counselling is aimed at alleviating these harmful stories.
