I’ll say it simply, love the Holiday Season. I love everything about it from the lights to all the colourful decorations to the music. I drive the people in my life crazy with all of my Christmas music and my off key singing all day long. I know that the Season can be challenging for people and we hear first hand the struggles of broken relationships, past family trauma and pain that surfaces this time of year.
Why do I love this time of year? I love the spirit of care, compassion and gratefulness that comes with Christmas. We had our office Christmas dinner last night and reflected on what makes this time of year special for each of us. I heard stories of family traditions of singing for grandparents, carolling in the snow Ontario, BBQ for Christmas dinner, watching special Christmas movies, laughing with family and friends and driving around to see the Christmas lights in the neighbourhood. There wasn’t a mention of gifts or spending copious amounts of money to make a person happy. Somewhere along the line in our society we have lost sight of the value of connection and relationships and I think that the Holiday Season is a gentle reminder of what is truly important. It’s not about battling the crowds of people in the mall for the toy of the season or road rage over a parking spot that you had your eye on.
I’m grateful that we have an amazing team of people in our office that value connection and quality time together. I’m thankful to all the special relationships I have with family and friends who laugh and support me in my life. I’m compassionate to those who don’t have a large group of people in their lives and wish them connection and care. I hope that we can all remember what this Season is truly about and spend time laughing and connecting with those we care about instead of focusing on spending our time finding that perfect gift.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
